Why Should You Have a Blog On Your Site?

7 August 2023

I’d like to share a personal story with you. At the beginning of this year I vowed to start blogging more regularly. When you run a business the art of self-promotion is an important skill, and one I don’t feel I have mastered. One step to improve this has been to blog once a month. But in July I missed my deadline. I initially thought missing a month wouldn’t be that bad, however, here is what I noticed:

  1. New users of my site dropped by 14%
  2. Overall visitor count dropped by 18%
  3. Average time spent on my site dropped by 24%
  4. Traffic from organic search dropped by nearly 25%

I was frankly shocked by these figures. Although there may be other factors, not blogging is certainly a contributing element for this downturn!

Blogging is an effective way to establish and maintain an online presence. It’s revolved from a journaling platform to a powerful tool for businesses to connect with their audience. In a nutshell, blogging can achieve the following:

It Boosts Search Engine Visibility

Search engines like fresh content. When you regularly publish blog posts with valuable information and appropriate keywords, search engines are more likely to index your site and rank it higher in search results. Building your sites E-A-T is a big part of good SEO. Find out more about E-A-T here.

It Drives Traffic to Your Website

A blog serves as a gateway to your website. When you share your blog posts on social media and through email newsletters, you drive traffic back to your site. More traffic means more opportunities for engagement.

Your Blog Supports Lead Generation

A blog can be a powerful tool for lead generation. Through strategically placed calls-to-action, you can convert those visitors into leads by encouraging them to sign up for your newsletter, download a free resource, or inquire about your services.

It Showcases Your Brand’s Personality

It’s an age-old phrase but people buy from people. A blog provides an opportunity to showcase the human side of your brand. This human touch helps to create a deeper connection with your readers, making them more likely to become loyal customers or followers.

Blogs Keep Your Website Fresh and Relevant

Regularly updating your blog with new content means visitors are more likely to return to your site when they know there’s always something new to discover. It also signals to search engines that your website is active and worth indexing, contributing to better search rankings.

Blogging is a powerful tool that can significantly impact your online presence and business growth. By investing time and effort into maintaining an engaging and informative blog, you can boost your website’s visibility, credibility, and audience engagement. As I learnt, letting yours lapse can really impact your sites performance!
